One of the most amazing things about wine is how it can elevate a meal from great to spectacular.  They make the other one better – kinda like a great marriage.  This Tuesday, Kathryn & Chef Chris are teaming up to offer a special spring wine and dine pairing menu.  By now you’ve heard about Esters’ new Chef de Cuisine, Chris, and hopefully seen all the beautiful new menu items we’ve added.  It’s hard to believe all this goodness coming from #thelittlekitchenthatcould with #nohood.  And for wine, we’re breaking out some gems from our reserve room (!!!) – so it’s going to be super special.  Be here Tuesday to experience this special menu.

Sunday Tasting: Farm Wine Imports

3-6pm

This Sunday we will be shining the spotlight Farm Wine Imports.  They’ve got some of our favorite wines from importers like Louis/Dressner and Jose Pastor, as well as a few of their own and some domestic gems.  And they’re from all over the world: Germany, Canary Islands, Spain, France, Italy, California, Oregon, Chile, and more!  All the producers they represent are committed to low intervention winemaking and organic, biodynamic or lute raisonnée farming.  If you’ve been to Esters before, chances are you’ve tasted a wine from their portfolio. Our incredibly warm and knowledgeable rep, Robert Brownson will be here to pour!

Sunday Tasting: Winemaker Wenzlau

3-6pm

We are so excited to pour with Cindy Wenzlau – quite possibly the most charming woman on earth! I’m in love with these Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs and the incredible family that makes them. I first met Tommy Wenzlau in the summer of 2012 in New York City.  We were taking our Court of Masters Certified Sommelier Tests together and since we passed, we decided to share some Champagne afterwards at Laura Maneic’s Corkbuzz.  He gave me his business card and six months later I met his mother, Cindy, in LA and tasted the first release of the Wenzlau Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  And the wines were spectacular – beautiful fruit balanced with fresh acidity and great texture.  I bought them both!  And have been buying them ever since. Now they make 6 different cuvées and we’ll have 4 of them open to taste!

Guest Somm Night: April

6-9pm

It’s about time we had another lady-somm in the house!  She’s serious about Italy both in her work (pouring wine at Mozza and working harvest in Piemonte last fall) and also personally (about to get married there).  She’s an Esters regular and will be pouring a flight of her favorites all night!

Winemaker Tasting: Vinca Minor

5-7pm

Taste 3 wines of beautiful, dry-farmed cuvées with Jason Charles of Vinca Minor.  Jason spent time after College working as a photographer in the US, Mexico, and Europe. He caught the wine bug waiting tables in New York City restaurants. After experiences working in vineyards in Saint Emilion in Bordeaux and the Sonoma Coast, Jason  started the Vinca Minor label to “explore the intersection between farmer, winemaker and artist.” He believes in organic farming, and attempts to make the wines as naturally as possible, always working with indigenous yeast, never filtering or fining, and racking only once before bottling. Jason started last year with a special plot of very old carignan vines in Redwood Valley, Mendocino, and will harvest a second vineyard of Merlot in Napa Valley in 2014 for the first time.

Sunday Tasting: Chenin Chenin Chenin !!!

Chenin is one our FAVORITE varietals in the store.  Sparkling, still, dry, or sweet – it’s wildly versatile and so expressive of where it’s grown.  Chenin in all it’s forms is such a special grape!  Come explore the different styles and terriors that we love.

Kathryn’s Picks for Spring – featured in Food & Wine Magazine

6-9pm

This month our  owner Kathryn was featured as one of Food & Wine Magazine’s Top Sommeliers of the Year (see the full article HERE).  She recommends her favorite springtime wines, and will be pouring flights of all 3 and chatting about how to pair them with your favorite market-inspired dishes.

NV Château de Brézé Crémant de Loire Rosé

“This is my favorite bottle of pink bubbles right now: crisp, clean, with really bright acidity. Normally I don’t
love Cabernet Franc’s leafy spice in sparkling wine, but
in this case, I’m crazy about it. And if I’m outside on the patio or having lunch near the beach? This is exactly what I’m looking for. Done!”

2015 Eva Fricke Rheingau Riesling Trocken

“Spring is all about that moment when our local market
is bursting with peas and radishes, and also fresh goat cheese. Sometimes fresh produce
like that doesn’t go perfectly with wine, but it will with this dry Riesling. Also, this wine gets better once it’s open. It
will be awesome the next day, too.”

2014 Pian dell’Orino Rosso di Montalcino

“Three years ago,
I went to Italy in May and made a visit
to Pian dell’Orino in Montalcino. We’ve always had their Brunello at Esters, but I tasted the more affordable Rosso
di Montalcino, and it was just gorgeous—delicate and light, but with enough oomph for roast chicken
or pork.”
